This series arose out of an offsite session of The Argument Clinic, where MS Quixote and Cat de la Hobbes attend ongoing group therapy.
The question at hand is whether music can be best explained by a mathematical framework. The Areopagus and Scienda engaged forthwith in the following genteel and mannerly (and extremely sober and serious) discussion.
In the back room around the snooker table, The Areopagus tossed a merry gauntlet in Scienda’s direction. A very silly gauntlet, with a smattering of rhinestones and a haunting but distinct waft of fish. Another time, we may investigate the question of whether said gauntlet has ever been used in a certain traditional dance style known as Au Cleese.
Since, chronologically, Quixote is forced to utilize the word response with regard to this scintillating Scienda post, it’s going to lend a modicum of credence to C.L. Hobbes’s insistence that she is simply reacting to the gauntlet cast by the mean ol’ Areopagus.
De la Mancha rides again! Our faithful and true-hearted Quixote de la Mancha’s follow-up post is as eloquent as it is humourous; it deserves to be read, and read thoughtfully. Quixote attempts to dispense with the question of “cool” on in autographa grounds — will this come back to haunt him?
4. On the Essence of Music, Part 2
Scienda repurposes the slapstick “Explanation of Everything,” deals with the coolness of Franz Liszt, and treads foolishly into the realm of youth culture.
Quixote’s gone on a musical rant, all the while watching his tone, though…he’s even brought in the Tone Ranger to assist. Now, to get a word in edgewise with our enthused guitarist…
6. On the Essence of Music, Part 3
Scienda answers a reference to occasionalism, cautioning TA not to get off-track in trying to extract some form of objectivism from the wilderness of experientialism. And Flanders and Swann track by, looking for a missing horn which nobody really misses.
