Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone already taken away from the tomb. And so she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”
He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face,
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all
To fall on Him.
Peter therefore went forth, and the other disciple, and they were going to the tomb… and stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in.
Simon Peter therefore also came, and entered the tomb; and he beheld the linen wrappings lying there, and the face-cloth, which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself.
For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.
So the disciples went away to their own homes.
His grave was assigned with wicked men,
Yet He was with a rich man in His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
As a result of the anguish of His soul,
He will see and be satisfied;
By His knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will justify the many,
As He will bear their iniquities.
But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping… she turned around, and beheld Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus.
Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”
Who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot,
And like a root out of parched ground;
He has no stately form or majesty
That we should look upon Him,
Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.
Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”
Jesus said to her, “Mary!”
She turned and said to him, “Rabboni!”
I delivered to you as of first importance that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins, according to the [Old Testament] Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.
And that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles.
And last of all, as it were to one untimely born, He appeared to me also.
The Apostle Paul, First Letter to the Corinthian Church
But now suddenly the full chorus was poured from every branch; cocks were crowing, there was music of hounds, and horns; above all this ten thousand tongues of men and woodland angels and the wood itself sang. “It comes, it comes!” they sang. “Sleepers awake! It comes, it comes, it comes.”
One dreadful glance over my shoulder I essayed — not long enough to see (or did I see?) the rim of the sunrise that shoots Time dead with golden arrows and puts to flight all phantasmal shapes. Screaming, I buried my face in the fold of my teacher’s robe.
“The morning! The morning!” I cried, “I am caught by the morning and I am a ghost.”
